Update 10pm — Phew! Garmin has fixed the “blue triangle of death” problem that prevented you from using your smartwatches. “We have fixed the issue that caused some devices to get stuck on the startup screen,” the manufacturer assures us, to everyone’s relief. However, if a watch is still stuck, you’ll have to restart it, hoping it works again, and then sync it. And if the device is still in trouble, a restore is required. Garmin provides guides for all of its models on this page.
Original article, 7:31 AM — For the past few days, Garmin watch users have been reporting a major problem with their devices: the watches are stuck in an infinite reboot loop, simply displaying a blue triangle, without anything else. In fact, these watches are no longer useful.
Reboot loop
After numerous reports on the manufacturer's forums and social networks, Garmin confirmed the existence of the bug on the home page of its support site. "We are aware of an issue that prevents some devices from going past the startup screen or displaying a blue triangle," the company writes. It also provides a workaround: hold down the power button until the device turns off, then turn it back on and sync it with the Garmin Connect or Garmin Express app.
And if that doesn't work, Garmin has published a series of recommendations. If those don't help, the last resort is to reset the watch to its factory settings. A cumbersome and time-consuming procedure, but it's still better than wearing a brick on your wrist.
At the heart of the bug is an update to one of the watch's software subsystems related to GPS. After installing the update, a faulty file causes the reboot loop. Now we have to hope that Garmin will deliver a permanent solution that will save users a lot of headaches.
