Ultragen 45GX990A: Impatient, LG presents the first flexible gaming screen OLED 5K2K

Forget 4K for gaming: the new trend in the high-end gaming monitor market seems to be 5K2K, or a definition of 5120 x 2160 pixels. In any case, this is one of the arguments put forward by LG for its new UltraGear GX9 range. Three models are unveiled by the manufacturer ahead of CES 2025, where these screens intended for gamers will be presented in greater detail.

Flexible 5K2K and OLED, the Holy Grail for gamers?

The flagship model of this new series, the 45GX990A, is, according to the manufacturer, the first flexible OLED gaming monitor capable of displaying a 5K2K definition. Its ability to switch from a flat surface to a 900R curvature in seconds allows LG to offer a personal visual experience adapted to different uses, from immersive games to productivity tasks. Its 45-inch OLED panel – WOLED to be exact – in 21:9 format benefits from an AGLR (Anti-Glare, Low-Reflection) anti-reflective coating and benefits a priori from a response time of 0.03 ms and a refresh rate of 165 Hz in 4K and 330 Hz in Full HD thanks to its second-generation Dual-Mode functionality.

This allows users to customize aspect ratios (21:9 or 16:9) and image sizes (39, 34 or 27 inches) by adjusting the combinations of resolution and refresh rate. What's more, it's VRR compatible and NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium certified, so this 45GX990A should suit both FPS fans and MOBA and RPG pros.

The UltraGear GX9 range includes another 45-inch diagonal model, the 45GX950A, which trades the flexibility of its big brother for a fixed 800R curvature and an RGWB subpixel layout intended to improve text readability. Both models also feature DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1 and USB-C ports with 90W charging capability, ensuring compatibility with recent graphics cards and devices. A third model, the 39GX90SA, is more reasonable with an OLED panel of “only” 39 inches and still a curvature radius of 800R.

These three gaming screens finally work under WebOS: this system transforms the screen into a true autonomous home entertainment hub capable of accessing streaming services without requiring a PC or set-top box, an approach inspired by Samsung's smart monitors. Pricing and availability information for the UltraGear GX9 series monitors is unfortunately still unknown, and is expected to be announced at CES 2025.
