Electricity at BMW is a hot topic, as the brand declared at the last Paris Motor Show that it wanted to cancel the ban on combustion engines in Europe. However, the firm is preparing to make a leap forward this year, 2025, with the presentation of the final version of the Neue Klasse X concept.
While waiting for the arrival of this new architecture, its first dedicated platform that will switch to 800 volts, BMW is offering an update to its iX, the behemoth of its electric range. Launched in 2021, it will start in spring 2025 with a slightly revised look and increased performance. No range of more than 1,000 kilometers, that said.
BMW's gigantic electric SUV will be able to undertake longer journeys on its xDrive60 version, which on paper offers 700 kilometers, compared to 633 kilometers until now. Its engine will also be more powerful, with a 544 hp block compared to 523 on the previous generation. The brand will still offer a lighter version, xDrive45 (408 hp compared to 326 hp before) and its M70, delivering 659 hp (compared to 619 hp before).
Small improvements while waiting for a real change
To improve autonomy while offering more horsepower under the hood, BMW has used new batteries with new-generation cells. As a result, the energy density is higher. On the xDrive45 version, we will be entitled to a 94.8 kWh accumulator, which is already enormous, for a charging power of 175 kW (still average). The xDrive60 and M70 retain the characteristics of a 109 kWh battery with a maximum charging power of 195 kW.
As a reminder, with its new Neue Klasse architecture, BMW will switch to 800 volts, which will benefit from higher charging powers. The brand will thus join Audi, Porsche, or even Kia and Hyundai. BMW announces up to 300 kilometers recovered in 10 minutes, with charging speeds improved by 30%. The current iX1 and iX2, based on 400 volts, are limited to 130 kW of peak power when charging, which cannot justify the price of the models.
