After Pac-Man and Snake, Google is offering a new game in its search engine. Block Breaker, which takes up the principle of the brick-breaking game, is now directly accessible via a Google search.
Google pays tribute to Atari's Breakout game, with a few surprises
When you Google “Block Breaker”, a box appears with a “Play” button. Clicking on it launches the game in full screen. Like the popular Breakout game, the goal is to break colored blocks using a ball bouncing on a paddle. Google added a few variations:
- Some blocks require multiple hits to destroy.
- Power-ups appear, such as an elongated paddle, extra balls, or even Space Invaders-inspired blasters.
- A “TNT” icon lets you explode multiple blocks at once.
- The player starts with three lives, but can get more as they progress.
The interface is minimalist, with a score displayed at the top of the screen. A new series of blocks appears after each level completed. By default, the game is silent, but it is possible to activate the sound effects via a dedicated icon.
Block Breaker is available on both computers and mobile, via the Google website or the Google app on Android and iOS. On a smartphone, it is possible to control the paddle by pressing directly on the screen. On a computer, the left and right arrows on the keyboard allow you to move the platform. A game to play only on your break time at work, obviously…
