Google's “surround to search” function arrives on iPhone but changes its name

Android users have gotten the hang of it: the “Circle to Search” function has become natural beyond the Galaxy S24, the first smartphones on which it appeared. Google has in fact extended it widely to the Pixel. Its advantage is its ease of use: you get information on an element circled on the screen, from any application. And it also works to recognize… songs!

A search at your fingertips

The function, which relies on Google Lens, is making its appearance on iOS. Not at the system level obviously, since this is jealously guarded by Apple, but in Chrome and the Google app. While reading an article, a video, or while searching for something to buy, it will be possible to circle an excerpt or an image to learn more.

Unlike Android, where you just need to press the navigation bar or the home button for a short time to activate the function, on iOS you will have to go to the three-dot menu of the apps and select the option "Search Screen". A Lens icon will also appear in the address bar, which will have the same effect.

Perhaps to avoid Apple's wrath, Google preferred not to use the same name as on Android ("Circle to Search"), but otherwise the operation is similar. Both apps are scheduled to be updated this week.
