The ordeal — everything is relative — suffered by Magic Mouse users could end in two years! A brand new version of the mouse is indeed in development on the Apple side, with a major change: the relocation of the charging port. Since the integration of a battery in place of AA batteries in 2015, it is in fact placed under the mouse, which prevents it from being used when it is full…
A mouse that responds to the finger and voice
The situation is certainly funny (and, let's admit it, quite rare), but recharging a Magic Mouse still arouses as much mockery. Apple unfortunately did not take advantage of the recent switch of the device to USB-C to change the position of the port. Two weeks ago, Bloomberg snoop Mark Gurman claimed that a new model was in the works, with a new design in mind that would solve the charging port problem.
The rumor is back today, via Korean news and gossip aggregator yeux1122. According to the leakers, the next-gen mouse will indeed change the position of the charging port, and it will offer a more ergonomic design. Apparently, Apple could also integrate additional touch functions with the recognition of more gestures, as well as voice controls. Talking to your mouse, that would be quite surprising!
Unfortunately, you will have to be patient before welcoming this mouse on your desk. The site talks about a launch following the 2026 MacBook Pro, which could be equipped with an OLED screen and an M6 chip. Two more years of recharging the mouse on your back…
Update 12/31 — Mark Gurman reacted to the latest rumors by adding that the support for voice commands in Apple's future mouse "made sense" in relation to artificial intelligence and the fact that the device is "on a 10-year cycle and more". Who knows how the world of computing will have evolved by then?
However, something may have got lost in translation. The Korean rumor mill did indeed pick up Gurman’s rumor that he was indeed talking about voice commands, but in the broader context of a computing landscape that is increasingly integrating touchscreens, hand gesture recognition, and… voice commands, that is. The Bloomberg snoop wasn’t talking specifically about the mouse.
