Need a coach on Minecraft? Microsoft AI is there

Microsoft has been in the spotlight for a few days thanks to its Microsoft Build 2024. The star of the show is artificial intelligence, which is creeping into all technological products, including PC productivity tools, but also video games. One of the demonstrations offered by the company is inside the game Minecraft, the famous pixelated sandbox that has already sold more than 300 million copies.

Copilot definitely lives up to its name since the tool aims to be your new construction coach. In the presentation video, we can see that the AI accesses the data on the screen in real time, analyzes shapes and materials, and has a deep knowledge of the Minecraft user interface since it is able to guide the player in the inventory menu.

The user will be able to have a completely natural conversation with Copilot, who helps them achieve their personal goal: building a sword. The goal is to be able to support players with difficulties, novices or those who want to build constructions with complex architecture. The AI gives you advice on what to do, prevents you from making certain known mistakes, and accompanies you as an experienced friend might, without the constraint of having to share their screen or describe it.

An autonomous AI

From this point of view, Copilot is also capable of giving more than advice, and knows how to be encouraging, give clues and analyze the tone of the conversation in real time. We can then see the possibility emerging of a real relationship of trust between artificial intelligence and its user.

Microsoft chose Minecraft to present the characteristics of Copilot, and this is not really surprising. It should be remembered that the game is developed by Mojang Studio, an entity that belongs to Xbox, which is itself the gaming branch of Microsoft. The AI is currently limited to a sandbox game, that is to say where the construction possibilities are free and infinite, but could eventually be applied to more complex titles, with guided narration, reflection and puzzle mechanics, which surpass simple crafting and object assembly.

In terms of ease and naturalness, Copilot is getting closer and closer to ChatGPT-4o recently unveiled in an OpenAI video. Both react promptly to user statements, bounce back on the information given, but above all collected, and provide answers that are not only clear, but also filled with humor and (artificial) wit.
