In 2006, Insomniac Games (developers of Ratchet & Clank, and recently Marvel Spider-Man and Marvel Wolverine) released their new franchise with Resistance: Fall of Man to accompany the release of the PlayStation 3. The series was given the right to three major installments (with Resistance 2 in 2008 and Resistance 3 in 2011), as well as two spin-offs, with Resistance: Retribution in 2009 on PSP (developed by Bend Studio) and Resistance: Burning Skies in 2012, which was an unspeakable disaster on PS VITA (the game was not developed by Insomniac Games either).
More than 14 years after the release of the last main game, could the series be about to rise from its ashes to return soon on PS5?
PlayStation re-registers the Resistance trademark
It was through the European Trademark Registry (EUIPO) that we were able to discover, with surprise, that Sony Interactive Entertainment had just renewed the Resistance trademark on January 26. With this renewal, the Resistance license is active again until 2035, that is, for the next 10 years.
So of course, this deposit does not necessarily mean that the license will return, or at least, that a new video game is in preparation. The reasons can be many and varied: a remaster, a remake, a new game or an adaptation of Resistance into a film (at the cinema) or a TV series. Moreover, just last week, Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern and Jen Huang, the new leaders of Insomniac Games confirmed their desire to return to the cinema by proposing adaptations of their licenses.
At the beginning of the year, it was Hermen Hulst who confirmed PlayStation's desire to bring back old licenses to the forefront. So, all hopes are allowed. Although we must also keep in mind that many brands are re-registered by companies and these latter never ultimately come back. So, let's not get carried away.
