Rumors are heating up for the PS5 Pro. Gamers know that this year will be full of surprises. While PlayStation has no plans to release any big first-party games, the company is counting on its partner projects and the release of its accessories to keep it at a comfortable level and not be forgotten. Could it be that a console is also on the way?
For some time now, leakers have been claiming that this will be the case, and that the PS5 Pro will be released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 and the mid-gen Xbox console as well. What do we know about the next PlayStation? Here's a recap of the info.
What is the design of the PS5 Pro?
This is probably the point on which we have the least information. Concepts, created by passionate gamers and analysts, exist on the web, but for the moment none of them have been confirmed by leaks and rumors.
It is likely that the console will keep the color code of its predecessors (black and white) as well as a design with curved lines to stay in the spirit of the range. This was already the idea during the PS3 and PS4 generations, the pro version offering a similar alternative to previous models, more or less large.
What are the performances of the PS5 Pro?
Recently, it is the performances of the PS5 Pro that have been talked about. A YouTuber leaked a document that outlined a number of specs for the console, which were later confirmed by sources familiar with the matter to Insider Gaming. More recently, The Verge was able to get its hands on confidential documents with the “official” details of the console. Here’s a quick rundown of the expected specs:
The Verge claims that the PS5 Pro’s GPU will be larger and will use faster system memory to improve ray tracing in games. One of the documents reportedly describes the PS5 Pro as a “high-end version of the PlayStation 5” with a mode that targets a CPU frequency of 3.85 GHz. We also expect changes in the PS5's memory. The standard model runs at 448 GB/s, but Sony is increasing it by 28% to reach 576 GB/s on the PS5 Pro.
All these features are likely preparing to accommodate extremely demanding and high-performance games. Some are already claiming that the PS5 Pro is in line with the promises of GTA 6, surely the most anticipated game of the next 10 years.
What is the price of the PS5 Pro?
Here too, we will have to play the game of estimations. Nothing has yet been revealed about the price of the PS5 Pro. The current console officially costs €549.99, which is €50 more expensive than its starting price due to inflation. It is not known whether this increase is intended to be temporary or permanent. Based on Sony's previous sales strategies, it is possible to predict that the PS5 Pro will be sold at the same price as the current version, which will see a price drop.
For the moment, nothing is certain, and Sony could just as well pass the €600 mark for the second time in its history with the PS5 Pro. This would not improve its brand image, although gamers are increasingly accustomed to spending colossal sums on their entertainment. What seemed unthinkable 10 years ago is much more possible now, as evidenced by subscriptions to SVOD platforms or the price of smartphones.
When is the PS5 Pro release date?
Today, analysts are almost certain that the PS5 Pro will be released this year. It seems that the end of the year is being favored by Sony, as was the case for the first version of the PS5. To corroborate this theory, The Verge states that developer kits would already be available for all studios who request them to update their existing games and future releases. The media outlet explains that Sony expects that all games will be able to be submitted for certification for compatibility with the PS5 Pro by August.
Despite everything, some leakers suggest that a later release date will be preferred. Indeed, this would not fit into a classic strategy of releasing a console without a major proprietary game associated with it to boost sales. In addition, in its financial report, the firm stated that it expected a drop in sales of its PS5 at the end of the year, precisely at the time mentioned for the release of the PS5 Pro.
It is possible that this is a well-oiled marketing communication, but it is also possible that Sony would prefer to launch its next PlayStation in early 2025. Be careful though, this is also the release window put forward by the leakers for the Nintendo Switch 2, so we are not immune to a duel of the titans.
