PS5 PRO: Overpowering and not too expensive?

PS5 PRO: Overpowering and not too expensive?

Three years after the launch of the PS5, it is already time to take an interest in the direct successor to the home console, the PS5 Pro. Several sources, leaks and analyses from recognized personalities in the world of video games, announce a significant gain in performance.

Will the PS5 Pro be affordable?

According to «Moore’s Law is Dead», a renowned YouTuber for its technological predictions, the console would be equipped with a Zen 2 processor (AMD), 16 GB of GDDR6 memory and a GPU capable of offering 60 computing units (even if Sony plans to limit the use to 56 units), compared to 36 on the PS5. This hardware configuration will make it possible to push the console's performance further... without blowing up the price.

Because one of the most intriguing aspects of the PS5 Pro concerns its pricing strategy. Still according to "Moore's Law is Dead", Sony would consider a possible starting point around $500 for the version without a disc drive: the production cost of this new console would not be considerably higher than that of the PS5 in 2020. This approach would indicate a desire to make cutting-edge technology more accessible, without compromising performance. Enough also to sell the device, and its games, more easily.

The launch window of the PS5 Pro is also subject to speculation, with AMD expecting a release for the 2024 holiday season. “There seems to be a broad consensus in the video game industry that Sony is indeed preparing the launch of a PS5 Pro for the second half of 2024,” explains analyst Serkan Toto when interviewed by CNBC.

This period would coincide perfectly with the release of highly anticipated titles, and in particular GTA VI: Rockstar's event game, scheduled for 2025, will single-handedly boost the entire video game sector. And console manufacturers are counting on taking advantage of this.

Beyond the hardware features, the PS5 Pro should introduce some very interesting innovations such as support for AI upscaling, a first for a gaming console. This technology makes it possible to improve performance without requiring a significant increase in raw power, an effective strategy as we already see on PC.

It remains to see what the competition has in its pipeline. Nintendo, which is not playing on the same field as the other manufacturers, could launch the Switch 2 in early 2025. As for Microsoft, a revision of the Series S/X ranges could also take place at the end of the year.
