After Helldivers 2, Rise of Ronin will also have coop

It seems like co-op is the big theme this year. Of all the games that are expected, a good handful will be playable with several players, but not competitively. The next one to benefit from such a feature is Rise of the Rônin, an action-adventure game developed by PlayStation Studios that is set for release on March 22.

Sony announced the good news earlier this week, while players were expecting to discover a completely single-player game. It follows the story of a Ronin, a samurai without a master, at a time when the Japanese people regain power after centuries of oppression. It is a title that will recall the brilliant Ghost of Tsushima and will borrow from more dynamic fighting styles. The studio at the head of the project had already produced the Nioh games.

As one might expect, it will not be local co-op, but online co-op. This will be able to support up to 4 players maximum and each must have their own copy of the game. This information is confirmed by the FAQ section available on the product sheet. As a reminder, Rise of theRonin will be released on PS5 exclusively. It is not known if it will ever be released on PC and, if so, if crossplay will be supported.

The desire to stop toxicity in games

Like Helldivers 2, Rise of theRonin will not include any PvP mode. The goal of the game is to be able to enjoy a piece of Japan, inspired by a real historical period, by fighting non-player enemies. This is the campaign mode that will also be available in co-op, so there is no exclusive content for the multiplayer part. Your friends will be able to help you complete your quest from start to finish.

As for the lack of PvP, the same kind of speech was presented by a developer of Helldivers 2 a few days ago. He claimed to want to fight toxic behavior in online games by giving players the only possibility to ally with other players to win. As a final token of mutual aid, it is even possible to reload a teammate's weapon when they shoot in the game.

It is unlikely that Rise of theRonin will go that far. But this same reason could be invoked by the studio to justify the lack of an online PvP part. The title already has a feature allowing you to make enemies or allies among NPCs and historical figures.
