Shall are you drawing to video games? Here are 5 tips to improve you

After decades of existence, video games continue to attract more and more fans on various platforms. Now that entertainment has even become a serious career prospect, many are trying to improve their level to reach the top. This is not easy, especially when you have less and less time to devote to video games.

However, there are a few tips that can help you climb the ladder and thus measure yourself against those who have been practicing for a few years. On shooters, platformers, MOBAs and even the most demanding games (Souls-like), these tips will allow you to surpass yourself without spending hundreds of euros on a complete setup that you would not know how to use to its full potential.

Specialize

If you are used to chaining games on Overwatch, then Call of Duty, then Battlefield, it would be better to stop. It is possible that your slowed progress is caused by your eclecticism. Conversely, focusing on a single title allows you to specialize, and not get tangled up with the controls of other games (powers, gunplay, point system, etc.). Everyone has their own specificities and mastering them can be more complicated than it seems.

It also allows you to further develop the techniques specific to the game, to design long-term strategies or to considerably increase your reflexes. This is particularly relevant if you want to improve your level to the point of projecting yourself into a career as a professional or semi-professional player. Finally, if you do not see any progress, or if frustration exceeds your satisfaction and your thirst for learning, do not hesitate to try other genres. Shooters, for example, are not for everyone.

Take breaks

The more you lose, the more you leave part of your patience in the game. Chaining games when you are starting to get frustrated is rarely a good idea. Taking breaks when you are at an impasse is therefore absolutely essential. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and if you’re just starting out, you know that it will take you some time to get used to the activity and master its main facets.

Don’t put pressure on yourself and don’t hesitate to pause or stop the game when it’s online, to catch your breath, but also to clear your mind. You then have two options: study the theory of your game to decide on an area for improvement during your next game, or completely stop playing the game until the next session, which generally does the most good. The same goes for your overall health and sleep times, which are extremely important for concentration and mood.

Invest in some accessories

If you play with a controller, it’s generally a good idea to ask yourself if you could benefit from some accessories. Today, it is easy to find customizable professional controllers, especially in terms of weight, trigger travel, or joystick sensitivity. But a few additional accessories can easily pimp up an ordinary controller. We think of joystick heads or shells that allow you to change the appearance, and therefore the handling, of your device.

On PC and even on console, do not hesitate to also test the keyboard/mouse combo. Everything will really depend on your goals, your tastes and in a pro controller or controller or mouse accessories. A more personal grip on your controller can only be beneficial to improve your technique. At first it may seem futile, but once you have tasted it, you will not be able to do without it.

Invest in a good screen

Not all equipment is equal, but investing in a good screen is almost essential for all games that rely on responsiveness. While you can do without a good resolution, for shooting or sports games, the most important thing is the frame rate per second (or refresh rate). The higher this data, the smoother the image, leaving little room for error or lag.

Having a higher or lower rate also allows you to rest your eyes, and therefore to test them over longer sessions, several times a week if necessary. It is also essential when your target is moving. This does not necessarily mean that you have to inject 2000 euros into an 8K 240 Hz Microled screen. A metric at 144 Hz is already quite sufficient compared to what your eye will be able to see in real time.

Playing with a headset

For shooting games, the headset is important. It allows you to locate the enemies in space, depending on the one you have chosen, and therefore to better understand the difficulties. Some souls like can also give timing indications via the sound design. It is important to listen carefully to the patterns that repeat themselves and the music that gives very valuable information.

No need to invest 1000s and 100s, there are very good entry-level headphones for less than 100 euros. The goal is that it is comfortable for your long sessions, that it has good isolation, and good spatialization. A headset also allows you to isolate yourself. No more distractions around you, concentration is at its peak when you only hear your game. If you have no ideas, here are some recommendations to help you.
