In 2013, the iconic Josef Fares took his first steps in the video game industry by participating in the development, writing and direction of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, the new game from the Starbreeze studio.
This first title was already conceived as a game featuring two protagonists, with gameplay focused on this narration with the two characters. We discovered the poignant story of two brothers who had to undertake a perilous journey to find a cure to save their father's life.
After the success of Brothers A Tale of Two Sons on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2013, Josef Fares left the studio to create his own company with Hazelight. It is with the latter that he will offer us the excellent games A Way Out (2018) and It Takes Two (2020), allowing two players to play cooperatively, games that offer innovative gameplay and very well-written stories.
Ten years after the original game, Brothers A Tale of Two Sons is back, more beautiful than ever on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC in a remake that aims to pay a very nice tribute to the original game. Mission accomplished?
A remake that pays tribute to the original game
Developed by Avantgarden and published by 505 Games, this reissue indeed pays a nice tribute to the original title. We are clearly in a remake (and not a remaster), offering you the same story, with improved gameplay, a fairly impressive graphic overhaul, some new features in the interactions offered in the game and above all, the possibility of playing two locally.
Brothers A Tale of Two Sons Remake therefore offers you the very beautiful production and narration of the original game, with this touching story of these two brothers. The strength of great games is to be able to move us without using words. And this is the case with this Brothers, since the characters do not speak. They express themselves with an unknown dialect and yet, with just music, a sequence, a staging, the game manages to touch us and convey universal messages. Get ready for a beautiful journey.
On the graphic side, this remake is very faithful. It manages to keep the artistic direction specific to the original game, while offering a much prettier and more detailed rendering. Whether it's the effects, the display distance, the detail of the textures or the new animations, this remake offers us a really nice graphic rendering.
The other very interesting aspect of the title is its gameplay. With this remake, it is possible to play solo or in local cooperation with two (which was not possible in the original game which only offered a solo mode).
When you play alone, you have to control the two brothers: the big one, with the left joystick and the small one with the right joystick. This configuration is not optimal and it takes time to adapt to synchronize the two heroes. Many times you will get tangled up. In itself, it is not very annoying, you just have to reposition the camera and our characters, but it remains quite special. Fortunately, you can control the camera manually with the L1 and R1 keys, allowing you to make your progress easier.
When you have two players, everything becomes much more intuitive and easy. Each player controls their character and you take full advantage of the gameplay's potential. Because yes, the different mechanics are a strong point of the game. You will have to play together and use the big brother and the little one to progress in the adventure, unlock passages or solve puzzles. Just like with A Way Out or It Takes Two, we have very good ideas on certain mechanics, the gameplay changes often and it is a real pleasure. Although the different gameplay changes present in Brothers are not as advanced as in the latest titles by Josef Fares. On the other hand, we recognize the studio's touch.
A small cooperative game, perfect for this weekend
