While the summer is going to be quiet for Nintendo, everything is going to speed up when school starts again. Starting in September, players will be able to get their hands on the new Nintendo Switch Lite Hyrule Edition, which will be released at the same time as the highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. The title will put us in the shoes of Princess Zelda for the first time. This information has created shock, enthusiasm, and sometimes doubt among some players who regret not being able to play as Link, the hero of the franchise since 1986.
Nintendo has however thought to everyone. Indeed, it seems that players will be able to play as Zelda and Link in Echoes of Wisdom. At least that's what its ESRB (Entertainment Software Ratings Board) rating suggests. For the English-phobic, this is a rating system that categorizes the game to recommend it to a certain age group of users, the equivalent of our famous PEGI in Europe. The ESRB rating is generally available at the end of the development process of a game, which would explain its appearance today.
Two characters for the price of one? Nothing is less certain
We then note that Echoes of Wisdom is rated 10+, and that it will be a game for almost all audiences, with light violence. The description of the gameplay is more surprising. It is written that as Zelda, players will be able to “use a magic wand to summon creatures (for example, coiled knights, pig soldiers, slime) for combat“.
It is also specified that Link will be playable and that we will be able to “[use] a sword and arrows to defeat enemies“. So it's official, players will enjoy some of the classic gameplay of a Zelda game, with sword parts. But the excitement generated by this news could be short-lived. While players already expect to be able to switch between characters at any time, Nintendo doesn't mention anything more concrete than the possibility, at a moment, to play Link.
If we rely on the trailer shared during the Nintendo Direct, we can easily imagine that the only time this will be possible is at the very beginning of the game, before the hero is imprisoned in a cage. It is possible that after his rescue, Link could take back the reins of the game, but this is however unlikely. Nintendo certainly wouldn't pass up the opportunity to put Zelda in the spotlight for the first time in nearly 40 years.
