Since its launch in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has made history in many ways, starting with its innovative design and then breaking a bunch of impressive records. Today, Nintendo is making another one official. It's not the much-anticipated title of best-selling console in history, but rather the one that recognizes the Nintendo console with the longest lifespan.
With a lifespan of 2,688 days (and counting🎵), the Switch has surpassed the record set by the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) which lasted 2686 days without being interrupted by the arrival of a successor. This exceptional performance not only testifies to the continued popularity of the console, but is also a marker of Nintendo's clever strategy to extend the life of the Switch.
Divide and conquer
One of the key factors in this longevity lies in the diversity of editions and models offered. Indeed, Nintendo has managed to maintain consumer interest with several console models, each meeting different needs. The Switch range is composed of three distinct versions: the classic Switch, the Switch Lite and the Switch OLED. This diversification makes it possible to reach a wide range of players, from those who prefer its portable format, to those who insist on the quality of a good home console.
In addition, Nintendo has released many collector's editions in recent years, each time focusing on the most acquired gaming communities. Thus, Mario, Animal Crossing and Zelda versions have seen the light of day, each attracting fans and collectors. The latest is the Hyrule Edition, which is already up for pre-order. Again, its late release date serves Nintendo's ambitions, which hopes to overtake the PS2 in the ranking of best-selling consoles, by banking on the enthusiasm of Zelda fans.
The Switch hasn't said its last word
The future of the Switch still looks promising with a multitude of titles planned for this year, and early next year. These include highly anticipated games like The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree, and Mario and Luigi. These releases are keeping players excited and ensuring strong sales for the current console.
Alongside these successes, the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 is looming on the horizon, with an announcement expected by March 2025. While the exact launch date has yet to be confirmed, there is already a lot of anticipation for this new console.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently expressed his confidence in the Switch's ability to maintain its momentum, despite its seven years on the market. This assurance is based on a strategy of continuously updating the game library and maintaining the quality of the user experience. Thanks to this strategy, the Nintendo Switch shows no signs of slowing down. It is still today at the top of sales, ahead of PlayStation and Xbox even though their respective latest consoles are half the age of the Nintendo Switch and are much more powerful.
