Ukraine will be covered by the Starlink satellite telephony service

Starting from the fourth quarter of 2025, Ukrainians who subscribe to Kyivstar will be able to send text messages to each other via the Starlink satellite network. Audio calls and internet access will be offered in a second phase. The country’s largest mobile operator has announced an agreement with SpaceX subsidiary that will allow it to provide better service, and for good reason: satellites are out of range of Russian attacks.

Kyivstar has been the pillar of Ukraine’s resilience throughout the war, and we are determined to leave no stone unturned to keep Ukraine connected,” explains Oleksandr Komarov, CEO of Kyivstar. Telecommunications infrastructure has obviously been among the targets of the Russian army since the invasion of the country in February 2022.

Starlink has quickly become essential to the Ukrainian army and the civilian population to maintain access to the internet. So much so that it has become a political and geostrategic issue; Elon Musk thus decided on his own to temporarily cut Starlink in Ukraine for fear of a nuclear response from Russia.

With this agreement, Starlink is strengthening its position in Ukraine. Its new telephone service should soon be switched on in the United States, it is already available in New Zealand.
