Windows 11: Google could soon integrate Gemini Live into the taskbar

Gemini Live coming soon to the Windows 11 taskbar? It could soon be possible. At least that's what WindowsLatest's discovery of the latest Windows 11 news suggests, regarding a recent patch for Chromium. It mentions fixing a feature that would be directly related to Gemini Live.

A few weeks ago, leaker Leopeva64 revealed that Google was working on a new button in Chrome's tab bar that would open a floating panel for a feature codenamed "GLIC." This would be none other than Gemini Live in Google Chrome. This would involve Google integrating its chatbot into its browser, as Microsoft did with Copilot in Edge.

But the Mountain View firm could go even further. Gemini Live, currently limited to a mobile application on Android and iOS, could, in addition to joining the Chrome sidebar, benefit from more advanced integration into Windows 11.

Gemini Live soon in the Windows 11 taskbar?

As Microsoft previously did with Copilot, Google is reportedly working on a solution to integrate a Gemini Live button directly into the Windows 11 taskbar. While exploring Chromium's code review tool (Chromium Gerrit), WindowsLatest made a rather interesting discovery. Google developers have indeed published a patch there intended to "fix a detachment on Windows". By digging a little into the code associated with this patch, it appears that Google is looking to improve the operation of the side panel that would be dedicated to Gemini Live.

While nothing is certain for the moment, the elements found in this patch seem to indicate that Google is looking for a way to improve the integration of its voice assistant. The goal here would be that it can be executed by clicking directly on a button that would be pinned to the taskbar. This system already exists within Chrome to quickly access certain features of the browser. This is indeed the case with the Password Manager integrated into the browser, for which it is possible to Add a shortcut from the settings, a shortcut that can then be pinned to the Windows taskbar.

By offering an option to better integrate its Gemini Live voice assistant into Windows, Google hopes to beat Microsoft and its Copilot, the operation of which has been constantly modified in recent months.
