The iPhone SE 4 could have a new name

For anyone wondering in 2016 what the “SE” in Apple’s newly launched iPhone SE meant, Phil Schiller (who was marketing director at the time) gave the answer: “Special Edition.” Since then, the entry-level smartphone has had two other generations, the last one dating back to 2022. Can we still talk about "special editions" in these circumstances when the device is well established in the landscape?

As close as possible to the iPhone 16

Apple could be thinking of changing the name of the 4th generation of the iPhone SE, expected for the spring. According to Majin Bu, the manufacturer would have set its sights on "iPhone 16E". The leaker is sometimes well informed... and sometimes very badly, so it is a question of taking the indiscretion with the usual tweezers. Nevertheless, this change would make sense.

Changing the name of the range would indeed allow Apple to make a statement, because this new version should put the old design with Touch ID home button and large borders around the screen in the closet. The iPhone SE 3 is based on the iPhone 8, a design that was already frankly outdated in 2022.

The iPhone SE 4, or iPhone 16E, would take the form of the iPhone 14 with its “all-screen” OLED design, Face ID, and even the action button that appeared with the iPhone 15 Pro according to Majin Bu. Not to mention support for Apple Intelligence, which implies doubling the RAM envelope (8GB instead of 4) and a sufficiently powerful chip.

As a result, this new iPhone SE would be more in line with the current iPhone 16 range, hence the manufacturer's desire to fully integrate it into the family. A bit like Google with the Pixel "a". The presentation of the smartphone is more or less planned for March: we will soon know.
