2.3 million bank cards were published on the Dark Web, how do you know if you are concerned?

The figure is chilling. By analyzing data from data-stealing malware between 2023 and 2024, Kaspersky cybersecurity experts estimate that since then, the data of 2.3 million bank cards have been published on the Dark Web, making them available to any malicious person who might acquire them. In total, 95% of the stolen numbers are still usable today.

France is not spared since it represents 2% of the total, or 40,000 people affected. Unsurprisingly, hackers have achieved their ends by infecting devices with malware, mainly smartphones. It is now important to check if you are affected by the leak in the following manner.

How to check if your credit card data is on the Dark Web and what to do if so

Unless you frequent Dark Web forums yourself, the only way to know if your card is affected is to monitor your bank account. Hackers will quickly start making payments or transfers through the stolen cards, so pay attention to the notifications your bank sends you and look at the transactions in progress.

As soon as you see something suspicious, for example a payment in a store located in another country, immediately block your credit card. The operation can be done from the establishment's website or application in a few seconds, as can ordering a new one.

Then, change the access passwords to the associated account, then notify your bank of the detected movement in order to request a refund of the amount illegally withdrawn. Remember that depending on your offer, you may be charged for replacing the card. Consult the bank's pricing brochure to find out.
