The majority of French people do not negotiate the price of their mobile plan. Those who try to get a discount from their operator, however, have a positive success rate.
Are you negotiating price reductions for your mobile plan with your operator? If the answer is no, you are among the 70% of French people who do not try to get a discount on the price of their subscription, according to the 2025 digital barometer produced by CREDOC in collaboration with Arcep, the General Council of the Economy, the National Agency for Territorial Cohesion (ANCT) and Arcom.
Over the past two years, 29% of mobile subscribers have tried to negotiate the price of their mobile plan. Among them, 17% did so only once and 12% did so several times. This practice mainly concerns young people, whose purchasing power is lower. In the 18-24 age group, almost half (46%) have recently attempted to negotiate with their operator.
Mobile operators frequently accept price reductions
For 34% of respondents who have negotiated their subscription price, the primary reason given is the price increase decided by the operator. The second reason is the end of a commitment period (23%), which is a good time to put pressure on your provider. The end of a promotional period or the availability of a cheaper offer from a competitor are then cited by consumers (18% each).
It's a shame not to try a negotiation, because customers often win their case. Two-thirds (67%) of customers manage to get a price reduction after a single negotiation and 79% of them succeed after several attempts. 72% of people who started a negotiation with their operator obtained a reduction in the price of their mobile plan. But since the majority of users don't negotiate, only 21% of mobile phone owners who signed up for a contract with an operator were able to secure a discount.
The barometer also tells us that 70% of French people pay less than 20 euros per month for their contract. Here again, there are large differences between age groups: young people prefer the cheapest contracts, while older people choose more expensive contracts.
