After the Model 3 and the Model Y, Tesla finally plans to give a second life to the Model S and the Model X. The project has just been confirmed by the VP of Engineering himself.

After Model Y, Tesla finally intends to offer a redesign to Model X and Model S

As you probably know, Tesla has been busy giving its most popular cars a new lease of life in recent years. The Model 3, its flagship sedan, was the first to be entitled to a complete overhaul in November 2023.

And then just a few weeks ago, the American manufacturer presented the total reissue of its Model Y. An essential step to revive the public's interest in its electric SUV. As a reminder, if the Model Y could boast of being the best-selling car in the world in 2023, it then lost ground in 2024 to European and Chinese competition.

Model S and Model X, Tesla's forgotten ones

Concerning the Model S and Model X, on the other hand, the facelift is still awaited. The last major refreshes date from 2021 and focused in particular on the interior (17-inch central screen, 12.3-inch digital instrumentation, 3rd screen at the rear for passengers, the horrible woke steering wheel, etc.) and some design tweaks for the Model X. The modifications were quite similar on the Model S.

Unfortunately for the brand, these new versions did not meet with the expected success. While it was planning to sell 100,000 units per year, Tesla has chosen to reduce production by half in 2024. A turnaround due to notably to increased competition from several players in the high-end EV market such as Audi, Lucid, Rivian, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The global success of the Model 3 and Model Y have also not helped, it must be recognized.

A redesign in the pipeline

However, Tesla does intend to update its Model S and X. Lars Moravy, the brand's vice president of engineering, confirmed this on the Ride The Lightning podcast: “Just give it a minute. We'll get there. The upgrade a few years ago was more significant than most people thought in terms of architecture and structure. We'll be giving them some love later this year. Everyone here has a little place in their heart for S/X. They're not going away anytime soon.

That's pretty clear. Unsurprisingly, the framework didn't go into detail, but we should expect to find some improvements from the new Model Y and Model 3 on these future redesigns. We're thinking in particular of the gigantic 1.60 m light strip at rear, acoustic glass or even motorized seats to name a few.
