Update 12/03 — Remote Desktop for Windows users will need to migrate the Windows app by May 27, warns. The legacy software will be retired on that date, so remote users and enterprise IT teams will need to make arrangements to connect remotely to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, or Microsoft Dev Box.
Original article, 09/20/24 — It has long been possible to display a remote PC on another device, with the help of Remote Desktop software, a classic in any software library. Microsoft has nevertheless decided to shake things up with a new software that replaces this well-known solution.
The Windows application is also compatible with Windows
After several months of beta testing, the Windows application is now available on all platforms: iOS, iPadOS and macOS, Android, and even... Windows. Yes, you can use the Windows app in Windows, and why not. For those who don't have the possibility to install applications on their PC (which can happen in business), there is also a web version accessible in a browser.
The Windows application allows you to manage multiple PC instances, and you can also connect to Windows in the cloud. Microsoft reserves this new feature for users with a Microsoft work or education account; the general public will continue to use the Remote Desktop software. The publisher has not announced anything regarding the opening of the Windows app to ordinary users.
The decoupling between Windows and hardware continues and is therefore amplified with this new feature. And Microsoft fully intends to completely cut the cord one day, thanks to Windows 365 which is a real PC in the cloud.
