Apple will revolutionize the interface of the next iPhone and Mac: what we know

Apple could be significantly revising the look of its operating systems with iOS 19 and macOS 16. The changes have been anticipated for a long time, especially since the launch of the Vision Pro headset. Indiscretions now point to the imminent arrival of profound changes.

If Apple is known for anything, it's its reluctance to change everything from one iteration to the next – especially when it comes to design. We obviously find this philosophy in the brand's operating systems. But there is still a tipping point beyond which the apple company more deeply refreshes what the interface looks like.

This tipping point generally corresponds to the arrival of a major new feature. Like for example the first Apple Silicon chips in Macs. Or, a little more recently, with the marketing of Vision Pro mixed reality headsets. The headsets' operating system actually takes up a design language introduced by the company in Vision OS.

Apple is preparing for major design changes in iOS 19 and macOS 16

A language that we were beginning to find here and there in the firm's ecosystem. Particularly in the latest versions of macOS (in particular the control center) and in the configuration pages of the new physical side buttons such as the Action button. Until now, however, the firm had been content to stay there. Risking breaking the uniformity in the process which nevertheless acts as a real trademark the rest of the time.

Indiscretions surrounding iOS 19, which is due to be presented on the sidelines of an event in June, suggest the imminence of a deeper deployment of these new design precepts on iPhone. YouTuber John Prosser particularly mentions a very Vision OS redesign of native applications such as the camera.

Which would be used throughout the operating system. There would even be an internal code name: “luck” for the new design introduced with iOS 19, and “cheer” for the new design coming in macOS 16. There are still plenty of unknowns at this point. One of the persistent rumors being the possible arrival of round icons instead of square ones in the next iteration of iOS.
