Avengers: Doomsday starts with an impressive cast!

Avengers: Doomsday starts with an impressive cast!

Live on YouTube and X, Marvel made a big announcement in front of its most dedicated fans. While all eyes are already on Avengers: Doomsday, the House of Ideas has just launched a cryptic live stream in which a silhouette drops off a filming chair. The entry confirms the return of Chris Hemsworth to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, without further details being given. In front of some 30,000 viewers live on YouTube and 500,000 on X, the House of Ideas is officially announcing the cast of its next Avengers film.

As a reminder, the last time the character appeared was in the fourth installment of his adventures with Taïka Waititi. Love and Thunder showed him taking on the role of surrogate father to the daughter of Gorr the Butcher. The film's endnote promised the character's return, without specifying under what circumstances. We can imagine that he will come to lend a hand to the other Avengers as they prepare to face Doctor Doom. As a reminder, Robert Downey Jr. will be lending his features. The announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con last July.

The list is growing

The broadcast is still ongoing and new names are being added to the list. We now know that Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm) will also be on the trip. Not surprising, as her character is closely linked to that of Victor Von Doom in the comics. She shouldn't be the only one; we can imagine that Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards and his friends Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn are not far behind.

Unsurprisingly, Anthony Mackie should lead everyone to victory against one of the most iconic antagonists in the Marvel mythology on glossy paper. This is already what Brave New World and its post-credits scene were already hinting at. Leader had warned the new Captain America that a war is brewing and it will be unlike anything our superheroes have ever experienced. The presence of Alan Silvestri's music, the legendary Avengers theme, leaves little room for doubt regarding the scope of this live event. This is indeed confirming the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for release in theaters in May 2026.

No major surprises so far

The wait is particularly long, but new names seem to be added to the list every ten minutes. Now it's Sebastian Stan's turn to join the team. This is hardly surprising when you consider that he will soon be leading the Thunderbolts* and that Captain America: Brave New World has confirmed his desire to enter politics. To the music of Black Panther, composed by Ludwig Göransson, the participation of Letitia Wright has just been made official, followed by Paul Rudd, aka Ant-Man. As a joke, a ridiculously small chair has been arranged. Wyatt Russel will accompany the team, he will take up the shield and the costume of U.S. Agent.

We can still note that it was more complicated to anticipate the presence of Tenoch Huerta Mejia, who played Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022. The character, an antihero who made life difficult for Letitia Wright when she had just taken on her responsibilities as guardian of her country. We can still imagine that the Prince of Atlantis will also be impacted by the arrival of Fatalis on Earth and without the reality of the Avengers. Moreover, Simu Liu will reprise his role as Shang-Chi, even though the film seemed to have been shelved after its disappointing post-Covid box office results.

The X-Men make their debut!

The surprise comes after two hours of rather expected announcements, when Kelsey Grammer's name is thrown around. The actor had already appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a post-credits scene in The Marvels. The actor who played Beast aka Hank McCoy in X-Men: The Last Stand had taken over Monica Rambeau after her jump to another reality. It's a safe bet that Captain Marvel's niece will bridge the gap between the Avengers of Captain America's reality and those of Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart's X-Men.

It also confirms that we'll probably have to wait a little longer to discover how Marvel truly intends to bring mutants back to the forefront; it's hard to imagine Kevin Feige simply bringing back the old actors. The superhero stable will likely have to navigate all these realities to better make them disappear and usher in a truly new era of superheroes. The reboot is coming?

What we know Avengers: Doomsday

Announced with great fanfare in July 2024, Avengers: Doomsday is the first part of a two-part series that will see the Avengers face Doctor Doom (in the original version) played by RDJ. The multiverse will obviously be at the epicenter of the film, as Marvel has been laying the groundwork for this battle since Endgame and its time travel. As a reminder, the House of Ideas still had to revise its plans when Jonathan Majors was found guilty of violence against a former girlfriend and sentenced to a year of domestic violence education.

The project, initially entrusted to Daniel Destin Cretton, then passed into the hands of the Russo brothers, who worked on Infinity War and Endgame. The screenplay is written by Stephen McFeely. Joe and Anthony Russo's recurring collaborator had already written the story for the two previous films, which revolved around Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow, to name a few.

Finally, the announcement, in addition to the (huge) cast, is that Avengers: Doomsday has officially entered production!
