Baldur's Gate 3 inspires this very good competitor, it was time

While Baldur's Gate 3 is soon to receive its highly anticipated (but sadly final) patch 8, another great RPG adapting the rules of Dungeons & Dragons has just received a major update, ten years to the day after its initial release, to bring itself up to date. It is also considered, and rightly so, as the spiritual sequel to BioWare's first two games that left their illustrious mark on the C-RPG world, but with a formula that is now considered outdated.

A major anniversary update for an excellent predecessor to Baldur's Gate 3

On March 26, 2015, Obsidian Entertainment delighted fans of C-RPGs and Dungeons & Dragons with a certain Pillars of Eternity. It offered us a brand new and original fantasy universe, which was largely inspired by the gameplay of BioWare's illustrious Baldur's Gate games. Obsidian, however, added its own personal touch with a gripping story, difficult choices, and companions as endearing as they were complex. As a reminder, it was in this universe that the Action-RPG Avowed, from the same studio, was recently placed.

Exactly 10 years after its release, one of the most convincing heirs to the first Baldur's Gate recently received a major update. This brings "numerous fixes and improvements to graphics, combat, quests, and much more". The idea was to modernize this formula a little, which, even 10 years earlier, offered a very "old-school" aspect that wasn't necessarily accessible to everyone. Among other notable major changes, we finally have a turn-based combat system, instead of just real-time combat with tactical pause.

This alone should greatly help players curious to try Pillars of Eternity, but put off by the original formula. The title thus comes a little closer to Baldur's Gate 3, which since its early access release has decided to offer exclusively turn-based combat (except through mods). Obsidian's title also receives a whole bunch of fixes for various bugs that were never resolved, and improvements to both the graphics and the interface, to bring it up to date and properly celebrate its tenth anniversary. You can find all this in more detail on a dedicated patch notes page. day 1.3.8.0.87535 of the game on the Obsidian forums.
