Canal+: Have you lost 4K with your subscription? You can get it back, but you have to pay

New Canal+ subscribers without commitment and existing subscribers who subscribed via Freebox have no longer had access to 4K UHD, HDR, and Dolby Atmos for weeks. These technologies are back for these customers, but they now come at a cost.

Canal+: Have you lost 4K with your subscription? You can get it back, but you have to pay

Canal+ unveiled its new offerings last January, and we were shocked to see that the group had decided to remove 4K from most of its no-commitment subscriptions. It was thought that only new customers were affected, but a few weeks later, existing Canal+ subscribers via Freebox found that they no longer had access to UHD definition. And now a new twist has been added to this story.

As spotted by Ultra-K.fr, Canal+ has just made available a paid option allowing Freebox subscribers to regain access to 4K. It is now possible to pay an additional 5 euros per month to add a user to your account, as well as to unlock UHD quality, HDR technology and Dolby Atmos audio. For an additional 10 euros per month, two additional users are allowed, in addition to unlocking UHD, HDR, and Dolby Atmos.

Canal+ charges 4K to non-binding subscribers

New Canal+ subscribers outside the Freebox ecosystem, who have subscribed to a non-binding offer since the change in the conditions of the various packages in mid-January, should also be able to access these two options. However, those who do not need to add members to their offer must pay the high price to have access to image and sound technologies that we thought were taken for granted. Clearly, Canal+'s strategy is to direct consumers towards its subscriptions with commitment in order to retain them.

This decision will not improve the popularity of the French audiovisual giant. Recently, the group was heavily criticized for not broadcasting the return leg of the Champions League Liverpool-PSG on Canal+, preferring to broadcast the eagerly awaited match on its Canal+ Foot channel. For many subscribers, this was a cold shower, and Canal+ was accused of forcing users to subscribe to a sports package to be able to watch the match, since the latter was not accessible with the other offers.
