Disney+ wants to expand its catalog with iconic brands. After its reinterpretation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, its project in development Eragon and its Marvel and Star Wars productions, the big-eared company is taking a 90s hit and bringing it up to date. This time, it is in collaboration with Hasbro that the company hopes to achieve success.
The craze for Barbie in 2023 marked This is a precedent for the film industry, which is looking to multiply the number of film and television projects surrounding iconic toys. Mattel has a number of films in development, while Hasbro is also hoping to bring its cinematic universe to life. In addition to Transformers, the toymaker is working on an exploitation of Magic: The Gathering. A film and a series are due to be released soon. Cluedo and Monopoly are also at the heart of Hasbro's film division's concerns. This time, the company's eyes are turning to the small screen. According to information from The Wrap, a Power Rangers series is under consideration. It hasn't been entrusted to just anyone, Disney+ is calling on creatives who made a strong impression in 2023. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in talks to write, show, and produce a live-action series for the platform and 20th Century TV. The Western version, called Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, will serve as the starting point. As a reminder, the American series was inspired by a Japanese production called Super Sentai. The American version even included footage from its predecessor.
New attempt
This isn't the first time a Power Rangers revival has been considered, even though the original series was still airing on Netflix in 2023. In 2017, the parent series was in its 24th season and a film was released in theaters. Under the impetus of Saban Brands, this project took the form of a reboot. Dean Israelite was the director. The success was not there, the critics were mixed and the box office did not live up to Saban's expectations. A year later, Hasbro reacquired the license.
With this series on Disney+, we recall that the big-eared company held the rights briefly. Hasbro hopes to capitalize on the nostalgia inspired by these heroes as much as on the talent of the creators of Percy Jackson and the Olympians to create the event. It remains to be seen whether the project will materialize and whether the public will be there. The next few months should be crucial for this series, about which we ultimately know very little.
