For Nvidia, "the era of generalist robotics has arrived"

Nvidia, a leader in the field of generative AI, is not going to miss the humanoid robot bandwagon. At the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) currently taking place in California, Jensen Huang, the group's CEO, declared that "the era of general robotics has arrived." And once again, Nvidia is selling the shovels and picks of this (potential) gold rush.

Nvidia wants to propel humanoid robots with its AI

In this case, it is an AI model called Isaac GR00T N1. Open-source, pre-trained and customizable, it was designed to accelerate the development of these famous robots. The Neo Gamma robot from 1X Technologies has already integrated These capabilities: it is capable of performing autonomous tasks after minimal learning, the manufacturer assures. Boston Dynamics, Agility Robotics, Mentee Robotics and Neura Robotics also had early access to GR00T N1.

Nvidia worked on a two-model architecture inspired by human cognition. System 1 is a fast-action model based on intuition and reflexes; System 2 is a slower reasoning model that analyzes the environment and plans actions. GR00T N1 can be generalized to common tasks such as picking up an object to move it with one or two arms, or passing it from one arm to the other.

The model can also perform multi-step tasks that require an understanding of a broader context and a combination of general skills. These capabilities can be applied to a variety of uses, including material handling, packaging, and inspection. Developers can take GR00T N1 and adapt it to their needs.

Of course, Nvidia isn't the only company in this field of AI for robots. Google unveiled Gemini Robotics last week, which fulfills more or less the same tasks.
