Google continues to deploy artificial intelligence-based tools across its services. A feature previously reserved for subscribers, is now appearing among some free users.
Google continues the integration of its Gemini artificial intelligence into its most used services. After Gmail, Google Docs, and Drive, it's the turn of the search engine to benefit from advanced features. Launched in early March 2025, Google Search's AI mode allows you to obtain more detailed answers directly in the results. It uses Gemini 2.0 to summarize, reformulate, and dig deeper into a query without needing to consult external sites. Initially reserved for subscribers to the Google One AI Premium offer, this mode is starting to be activated free for some users with a simple Google account.
A dedicated button, placed next to the “All” tab, allows you to activate this new function. Once launched, the AI displays an interactive box that groups the most relevant answers, while offering the possibility of asking additional questions. The system is based on more advanced reasoning, a better understanding of complex subjects and a more natural interaction. The goal is to make searching more fluid, closer to a discussion than a simple series of links to consult.
Google is rolling out AI mode in search on a large scale with advanced functions
This gradual opening is part of a long-standing trend at Google. For several months, the company has been gradually unlocking tools previously reserved for paying subscribers. Gemini's memory, document reading, and real-time voice conversations are already available in the free version. The company seems to be following a phased launch strategy: new features arrive first to subscribers, then are rolled out to the general public if the tests are conclusive. This allows for adjustments to the tools before a global release.
AI mode is still in the experimental phase and remains limited to the United States for the moment. You must register on Google Labs to access the waiting list. Once activated, the user is notified by email. Google is already planning to enrich this function with visual answers, clearer formatting, and new types of content. The rollout in France is expected in the coming months, although no date has been announced. Ultimately, this development could profoundly change the way Internet users use Google on a daily basis.
1/ Today we’re expanding access to AI Mode beyond Google One AI Premium subscribers in the US, as we begin taking people off the Labs waitlist. We’re hearing early users really appreciate the ability to get AI responses for tougher questions, along with fresh, high-quality info… pic.twitter.com/nhJwn1eodb
