Huawei has just launched a new foldable smartphone that stands out with its unique format. Unlike traditional models, the Pura X opens sideways, offering a larger screen. This phone also marks the end of Android at Huawei and introduces a brand new AI assistant.
Foldable smartphones are gaining popularity, with models like Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Motorola's Razr 50 adopting a classic vertical design. This format allows to reduce the size of the phone when closed, while offering a large screen when unfolded. But Huawei has decided to innovate with a totally different concept.
The Huawei Pura X introduces a side opening mechanism instead of the usual vertical folding. When closed, it looks like a classic flip phone with a small square external screen and a triple camera module. But instead of opening upwards, it opens to the side, revealing a 6.3-inch main screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is wider than other foldable models. This choice brings it closer to book-sized foldable smartphones, while retaining the compactness of clamshell models. The Pura X turns the page on Android and introduces the Harmony Intelligence AI assistant. With this model, Huawei is abandoning Android for good. The Pura X runs on HarmonyOS Next, a version of its in-house operating system that no longer relies on Android's open source code. Unlike the Mate 70, which offered a choice between the in-house OS and a version compatible with Google's, this new smartphone does not support any of that company's applications. The brand is thus continuing its transition to a 100% independent ecosystem, in response to American restrictions that prohibit it from using its services.
Another major new feature, the Pura X is the first smartphone to integrate Harmony Intelligence, an AI assistant based on the Pangu model and powered by DeepSeek. This system marks a strategic step forward for Huawei, which is investing heavily in artificial intelligence with its own Ascend AI chips.
According to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Huawei has become a key player in AI in China and its rise cannot be ignored. For now, the Pura X is only available in China at a price of 7,499 yuan (around 1,000 euros). No information has been communicated on an international release.
