Is Daredevil Born Again taking us for hams?

Is Daredevil Born Again taking us for hams?

From the very first episode of Daredevil Born Again, the characters are not spared from death. Foggy's assassination leaves Matt and Karen in shock, acting as a catalyst for the plot. The Devil of Hell's Kitchen abandons his costume, but his old rivalry with Wilson Fisk promises to quickly rise from the ashes. While Marvel has yet to deliver the conclusion to this new batch of episodes, we can already expect some explosive twists. One in particular could change the rest of the story.

Foggy may not be dead

You read that right. As unlikely as it may be, Foggy's character may not be as dead as he seems. In the comic book The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson, we discover that Murdock's associate and best friend faked his own death to enter the FBI's Witness Protection Program. Aside from the similarity of the situation, the clue that tips us off comes from a seemingly innocuous detail: at the beginning of the first episode, when the trio leaves their office, we see the number 468 on the facade of the building. The choice is far from random, since it is precisely in the comic Daredevil #468 that Foggy pretends to be dead.

It's hard to see this as a simple coincidence. In the Marvel comics universe, Foggy Nelson has developed an astonishing ability to escape death. In Daredevil: The Devil in Cell Block D, Matt is imprisoned at Rikers, and Foggy visits him. He is then stabbed and presumed dead for several issues, before it is discovered that he survived. In 2014, in Daredevil #5, Matt helps Matt stage his death by causing an explosion. In episode 181, Elektra dies in his place when Bullseye is sent by Fisk to eliminate him. Does this situation ring a bell? In the comics, Foggy Nelson's death is rarely permanent. While it is brutal and particularly violent in Born Again, it's possible that Marvel is once again playing on our nerves. This wouldn't be the first time a presumed-dead character has made a surprise reappearance in the MCU. Marvel executive producer Brad Winderbaum has confirmed that Elden Henson will be in season 2, although it's unclear whether it will be a full-blown return or just flashbacks.

If the character returns, Matt would have to navigate between the joy of seeing Foggy again and the feeling of having been manipulated. His return would have a considerable impact on the dynamics of the series. It remains to be seen who orchestrated this set-up and for what purpose. Vanessa Fisk emerges as a potential suspect, having played a crucial role in Daredevil's downfall in glossy magazines. The FBI could also be involved, justifying the need to convince Matt of his best friend's death. It's also conceivable that Karen is in on it. The young woman's departure for San Francisco could be a way for her to maintain this facade.

Such a twist could also explore the psychological consequences for Foggy himself. In the comics, his experience in the Witness Protection Program plunges the character into a deep state of unease.

This ambiguity surrounding Foggy Nelson's fate is far from confirmed. His death scene in Born Again seems deliberately more definitive than in the comics, and Matt even hears his friend's last heartbeat before he passes away. In future episodes, we'll have to scrutinize every detail in search of additional clues.
