Light Phone 3: This minimalist smartphone is sold at gold prices

Do you dream of disconnecting but can't do without your smartphone entirely? The Light Phone 3 could be the solution... provided you have the budget for an iPhone! This new minimalist phone promises to free you from digital distractions, but at what cost?

Light Phone 3: This minimalist smartphone is sold at gold prices

The Light Phone 3, the latest addition to Light's sleek phone range, has just been launched. This new version marks a turning point for the brand, with a soaring price but also revised features.

Listed at 799 dollars (with a launch promotion at 599 dollars), the Light Phone 3 makes a significant leap compared to the 299 dollars of its predecessor. This price places it in the same category as high-end smartphones, like the iPhone 16. But what does it offer to justify such a price?

Assumed minimalism, but more modern

The most notable change is the abandonment of the e-ink screen in favor of a 3.92-inch OLED screen. While this may seem like a step backward to some purists, Light assures that it makes the device more responsive. The interface, however, remains in black and white, true to the brand's minimalist philosophy.

The Light Phone 3 offers the basic functions of a phone: calls, SMS (with group support), GPS navigation, alarm, calculator, notes, music, podcasts and tethering. No app store here, the goal remains to limit distractions and stick to the essentials.

Hardware-wise, there's a metal frame, a fingerprint sensor, a dedicated button for the 50-megapixel camera and a USB-C port. The phone also features hardware for future features, such as an NFC chip for contactless payments and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls.

With 128GB of storage and 6GB of RAM, the Light Phone 3 is well-equipped for a minimalist device. It runs Android, but in a very stripped-down version.

The Light Phone 3 is aimed at those looking to reduce their digital dependence, while still retaining some essential features. However, its high price tag might put some people off, especially when alternatives like the Barbie Phone are available. $129 is available for those who really want to get back to basics. The first Light Phone 3s are starting to ship to pre-ordered customers. New buyers will have to wait until June.
