Like The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast before it, Lilo & Stitch is becoming flesh and blood. The company with the big ears is continuing down the live-action path with one of its most beloved films of the 90s. Without Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, directors of the original film, Dean Fleischer-Camp wants to bring together several generations of viewers around this proposition. She hopes that the realism of her character, combined with a live-action universe, will allow her to attract the attention of young audiences. The first images show that the narrative will not take new paths. The film will tell the story of the encounter between a blue alien and a touching and funny little Hawaiian girl. Stitch has escaped from a laboratory in space and is pursued by Captain Gantu, a bounty hunter. In the face of adversity, the two heroes will form an unbreakable friendship and learn the meaning of the word family.
Unsurprisingly, the film plays the copy-paste card and seems to reproduce the aesthetic and approach of the first film, minus the deluge of colors and the playfulness of pencil animation. On the other hand, we shouldn't be allowed to see the washing machine scene, which was removed from the animated film for fear that many children would imitate the little girl who hid in it to avoid her older sister. We can also note the use of important music from the animated version, taken from a scene that also involves dirty laundry. These never-before-seen images are presented to the sound of "You're the Devil in Disguise" by Elvis Presley.
In theaters in a few months
The date is set for May 21 in theaters. The very young Maia Keoloha will play Lilo while Sydney Elizabeth Agudong will be her big sister Nani. Courtney B. Vance will be Cobra Bubbles. Chris Sanders won't be far away either since he's been announced in the role of Stitch. He's the one who's lent his voice since the very first film. In front of Dean Fleisher-Camp's camera, we will also find Zach Galifinanakis and Billy Magnussen in the roles of Jumba and Pleakley. While we could expect to see them in their alien forms, they should also appear in human guise.
