On October 14, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10. After this date, Microsoft's operating system will no longer receive any updates. But the end of support for Windows 10 won't happen alone. It will also bring with it the end of other Microsoft applications. This is the case, for example, of OneNote for Windows 10, a version of OneNote that was pre-installed on the operating system, and whose support will end at the same time as that of Windows 10. Microsoft has just officially announced this in a message published in its Microsoft 365 message center.
Microsoft will force you to Migrate to OneNote on Windows (or OneNote on Microsoft 365)
Besides the upcoming end of Windows 10, Microsoft justifies the end of OneNote support for Windows 10 for security reasons. Unlike the latest versions of the software, this older version of OneNote does not integrate the security measures necessary to protect sensitive data contained in the app. Above all, Microsoft highlights the fact that Copilot's AI-powered features integrated into OneNote for Windows (available for free on the Microsoft Store, or via a Microsoft 365 subscription) "is the future of OneNote."
To ensure that users make the switch to a more recent version of the utility, Microsoft has planned a few surprises. And this will certainly not please everyone. Microsoft explains that starting in June 2025, it will intentionally slow down data synchronization performance in OneNote for Windows 10. Real-time collaboration and access to notes across multiple devices will therefore be more complicated. Starting in July, Microsoft will begin to display banners to invite OneNote for Windows 10 users to migrate to OneNote Microsoft 365.
For its enterprise customers who are still using OneNote for Windows 10, Microsoft has published a migration guide to switch to OneNote for Windows.
This decision by Microsoft is not very surprising. The company, which has already applied it to other applications, intends to use this method to encourage users to migrate to Windows 11. A few weeks ago, the company announced that Microsoft 365 apps would no longer be updated for Windows 10.
