Could the PS5's Dualsense have inspired a future Xbox controller? Apparently yes, since the media Tech4Gamers has just gotten its hands on recent patents that have been filed by Microsoft and which suggest that the American firm is working on new haptic vibration systems for the next Xbox controllers.
New Xbox controllers with haptic vibrations?
If Microsoft won almost at unanimously the debate of the best controller on the PS4 and Xbox One generation, it is quite obvious that the trend has reversed on PS5 and Xbox Series X / S with a rather impressive DualSense. Although the latter is not yet sufficiently exploited by third-party and first-party developers.
In any case, the revolutionary haptic feedback and adaptive trigger system of the PS5 controller seems to inspire Microsoft which would currently be working to offer similar features for future controllers. According to Jez Corden, there is a good chance that this work will concern the controllers of a next generation of console and not for the current Xbox Series X/S.
From the patents, we can learn that the new motor consists of a housing, a connector, and a haptic motor. Once activated, the haptic motor "will move relative to the housing to generate haptic feedback". Moreover, the patent specifies that the haptic motor can be adjusted "dynamically" to optimize the device and that the latter will be able to create two types of vibrations in order to increase the depth and the sensation of the return.
Description of the patent on the new haptic motors
Of course, these patents inevitably make us think of the Xbox Sebile controller, a haptic feedback controller project that we discovered in the September 2023 leaks. However, the leaks suggested that this controller was expected for spring 2024. Unfortunately, we still have no news of the latter.
