In order to better protect users, Google is deploying a system for detecting scams by message or call during conversations, not just upstream. The Gemini AI takes care of this.
Our Android smartphone us protects against scams. Google has implemented automatic detection tools for potentially dangerous numbers, warning us before taking the call or reading the message received. The system is very effective, but scammers are doubling their ingenuity to get through, in particular by masking their true intentions until later in the conversation.

If you started the conversation thinking you were talking to a harmless person, Android's safeguards have a much harder time seeing than they do. At some point, the conversation slowly shifts to an attempt to get personal information or money from you. That's where Gemini AI comes in.
Gemini AI Spots Scams While You Chat
The principle is simple: when a number that is not part of your contacts sends you an SMS or RCS message and you start chatting, the AI analyzes the exchanges. If it spots a pattern used by scammers, a message is displayed to warn you.
You then have the choice between ignoring the warning or reporting and then blocking the number. An example of such a conversation can be seen in the screenshot below. The tool is first deployed in English in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. Other countries will be added to the list “soon“, with no specific date.
Google also announced that it is continuing to test a similar feature for calls, still using Gemini. An experiment launched in November 2024 to a small number of users in the United States that will be extended to all Americans in the coming weeks. Only owners of a Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro or Pro XL are affected.
There also, AI only intervenes in calls by numbers that are not in your directory. In case of suspicion of scam, it offers you to continue or end the call. Unlike detection in messages, the Mountain View firm is not yet talking about a deployment in other countries of the world.
