Percy Jackson: Disney+ has excellent news for its series

Disney+ believes in it wholeheartedly. Two years after the launch of the Percy Jackson series, the platform is working on a second batch of episodes. Filming has just wrapped, suggesting a return of the demigod and his friends next December.

These new episodes will adapt the book Sea of Monsters, which was already brought to our screens by Thor Freudenthal in 2013. It seems that Mickey's plan is going smoothly and its production is aimed at young adults is well on its way to establishing itself among the hits in its catalog.

In March 2025, the platform confirmed its great ambitions for this project, which is supposed to rival the entertainment giants in the youth department. Disney+ has given the green light to a third season, which is promised for the coming years. In a press release, the author and creator of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is delighted with this news.

A first!

This news, in addition to confirming that Percy Jackson is a hero who matters to Disney+, marks a turning point for the mythology. Indeed, viewers had never been able to see the third novel adapted for the big screen. After the releases of The Lightning Thief and Sea of Monsters, 20th Century Fox had abandoned any ambition to create a true saga. Besides moderate financial success, the first adaptation of Rick Riordan's fantasy had suffered from criticism, to say the least, from the press and the audience.

Some choices made by the company had been strongly criticized by early fans, starting with the characters' ages which had been modified to match the criteria of the current teenage sagas. If the studio hoped to reproduce the Harry Potter miracle in the cinema, with Chris Columbus at the helm, it is clear that the little wizard with glasses remains unbeatable.

Rick Riordan was also much more involved in this new version, he is co-creator of the series with Jon Steinberg on season 1 and Dan Shotz on the second. Disney seems to have found the best way to pay homage to the son of Poseidon and his epic quests.

Always faster

This rushed renewal is rather encouraging for impatient viewers. Disney+ undoubtedly wants to speed things up to avoid what James Cameron recently called the Stranger Things syndrome. The series uses young actors, who should theoretically only be one year older between each season. However, to avoid the embarrassment of having to present young adults as teenagers, the platform could want to bet on a more intense pace. Seasons under the tree every year soon?

We'll have to wait to find out. In any case, see you next December on Disney+ to find Walker Scobell, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhadri in the roles of Percy, Annabeth, and Grover. Note that the series must deal with the death of Lance Reddick and that Courtney B. Vance is now playing Zeus. Her participation was announced last November.
