Presented as “the world's most advanced connectivity solution for Android smartphones” by Qualcomm, the X85 5G Modem-RF platform represents the manufacturer's eighth generation of 5G modem-antenna solution, and the fourth to integrate artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence to improve speeds and coverage
Compatible with all 5G frequency bands worldwide (from 0.6 to 41 GHz, i.e. the 5G mmwave, sub-6GHz bands but also via satellite), the X85 5G Modem-RF platform promises speeds of up to 3.7 Gbps in sending and up to 12.5 Gbps in receiving. This is significantly more than the manufacturer's previous solution, which was capped at 3.5 Gbps in sending and 10 Gbps in receiving data. Qualcomm explains that these speeds are possible thanks to the use of 1024 QAM modulation and carrier aggregation in uplinks and downlinks, all sprinkled with a little AI.
The manufacturer indicates that its platform integrates a “5G AI” coprocessor dedicated to artificial intelligence. Announced as 30% more efficient in inference than the previous generation, it allows – still according to Qualcomm – to intelligently manage network traffic by prioritizing certain flows, and to improve energy efficiency and coverage while reducing latency. It also handles antenna switching between cellular and WiFi to ensure a stable connection.
Qualcomm says the X85 5G Modem-RF is currently being sampled by customers: manufacturers – except Apple, which has decided to develop its own in-house solution, the Apple C1, for its new smartphones, including the iPhone 16e – are already integrating this new platform into their future devices. The first products equipped with the X85 modem should be available in the second half of 2025.
