After several years of collaboration, Rockstar Games and Video Games Deluxe have decided to officially join forces. Take Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, has just announced the acquisition of the Australian studio, which is joining the Rockstar family under the name Rockstar Australia.
Rockstar Australia: reinforcements for GTA 6? Or for new projects?
Founded in 1998, Rockstar Games has continued to grow over the years, through its parent company, Take Two Interactive, which has multiplied studio acquisitions. The latest acquisition was just last week, with the Australian studio, based in Sydney: Video Games Deluxe.
This studio has been collaborating with Rockstar for a decade on numerous titles such as L.A. Noire The VR Case File (the VR version of L.A. Noire on PC and PlayStation VR). Recently, it was this studio that saved the release of GTA The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition with a major patch released at the end of 2024 on PC and consoles, which finally made it possible to correct the situation and offer fans a remastered version worthy of the name of GTA III, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas, three years after the game's release.
GTA The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition was developed at the time by Grove Street Games, which was clearly overwhelmed by the scale of the project. Video Games Deluxe also contributed significantly to the development of the mobile versions of this trilogy. As our colleagues at Rockstar Mag’ (the leading media outlet specializing in Rockstar games and studio news) point out, Video Games Deluxe was also involved in the GTA San Andreas VR project, announced by Mark Zuckerberg at the end of 2021 and from which we have no further news.
A few hours ago, Take Two Interactive, Rockstar Games and Video Games Deluxe confirmed via a press release issued on the website BusinessWire, the combination of the three companies. Video Games Deluxe then becomes Rockstar Australia and joins the group today. Since its creation in 2013, the studio had mainly worked on projects in collaboration with Rockstar Games.
There is a good chance that the studio will be able to help with the development of GTA 6 in the last few months that remain and that the studio will be able to prepare and take part in new projects for the coming years.
