Renault cracks and produces 1980 R5 with 540 hp to revive the turbo

Renault was very serious in 2022 when it presented the R5 Turbo 3E concept at the Paris Motor Show. At the end of the pandemic, the first sketches of the future electric city car were already combined with all the extravagance and nostalgia of a Turbo body, the legendary version of the 1980s, which sold 4,857 units between its first and second generation (Turbo and Turbo 2). Three years later, a "production" version will be marketed based on the R5 E-Tech. Limited to 1,980 units perhaps, but with a completely crazy set of features, enough to make production relatively larger than it might seem.

The diamond brand does not plan to launch its little racing cars right away. They will arrive in 2027, at prices that we do not yet know, but that Renault should reveal by spring. They will undoubtedly be more than 100,000 euros, far from the target of 25,000 euros for the standard electric car. For customers, crazy figures. In addition to a bodywork adorned with fender flares and disproportionately large diffusers, the R5 Turbo 3D will integrate two motors in the rear wheels, each with a power of 200 kW, for a total of 540 hp and a torque curve reaching 4800 Nm.

Renault will use an 800-volt architecture on its R5 Turbo 3E

It's hard to imagine that such a machine will be able to transmit all of its power to the road without the wheels struggling to find grip. Renault has already informed us of its 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h. To avoid losing all of its energy at the first acceleration, the R5 Turbo 3E will rely on a 70 kWh battery with a specific cooling system (the objective being to avoid fires) and an 800 volt architecture for a charging power capable of reaching up to 350 kW (10 to 80% in just 15 minutes).

It is understandable that such a reissue of the R5 Turbo will not arrive until 2027. Inside, Renault will offer a gigantic brake electro-hydraulic hand, so that future drivers can have fun taming the car's 540 hp in Drift mode, or in Rally mode. The occupants will be seated in bucket seats with carbon and Alcantara. That said, several elements will be recovered from the classic R5, such as the door handles, the mirrors and the taillights. The bodywork has nothing to do with it, as it will be entirely made of carbon and composite, for a total weight limited to around 1400 kg.
