The series Severance, available exclusively on Apple TV+, won over audiences with its first season in 2022. After a three-year wait, the second season premiered in January, with new episodes delivered every Friday until March 21, 2025. Apple doesn't provide any audience figures, but according to weekly rankings from JustWatch and Reelgood, Severance ranks second among the most-watched series by users of these services, ahead of Netflix series like The Night Agent and The Recruit.
A highly anticipated return that's a hit
For those who haven't yet checked out the series, Severance tells the story of Mark Scout, played by Adam Scott, who leads a team of employees who have undergone surgery to separate their memories between their professional and personal lives. This experience takes an unexpected turn when Mark finds himself at the heart of a mystery that pushes him to discover the truth about his work and himself.
The success of Severance is no fluke. Apple has gone all out on promoting its streaming service. Last month, Apple TV+ offered a free weekend to attract new subscribers. In a rare move, the manufacturer teamed up with Roku to offer the first season of Severance for free on the Roku Channel. And to make even more noise, the main actors made a surprise appearance in a pop-up office inspired by the series at Grand Central Terminal, New York.
Severance is not the only series with shine on Apple TV+. Silo, which finished its second season a few weeks ago, and Prime Target, a new thriller miniseries, have also found their audience. Apple must be delighted, and somewhat relieved, to see its series do well — especially after having gone to great lengths to promote its streaming service and invested billions of dollars in the production of exclusive content.
Without a sufficient catalog, Apple TV+ does not yet have the weight of Netflix or Disney+. But the platform is starting to establish itself with original series that make an impression. Its weekly broadcast model, far from binge-watching marathons, allows his productions to stay in the spotlight longer.
