Sony will join the RGB LED revolution in its TVs, but not before 2026

Sony will join the RGB LED revolution in its TVs, but not before 2026

It was one of the most prominent screen technologies at CES, and Sony decided to take advantage of it. The Japanese TV manufacturer has officially announced the upcoming launch of a model equipped with RGB LED technology. More specifically, Sony has admitted to having developed its own industrial solution for RGB LED. So don't expect to see a TV that will wow you right away; unlike Hisense or TCL, which will be distributing their RGB models this year, Sony will wait until next year to integrate this new panel into one of its TVs.

While the official announcement of the 2025 range is still pending (it will be announced in early April), Sony has therefore chosen to communicate afterward. A way to lessen the disappointment of those who were hoping for an RGB model this year? It must be said that Sony's history with RGB isn't new. The manufacturer designed the first LCD with full array RGB backlighting over 20 years ago, in 2004, before moving on to other technologies later.

For its future range, Sony will obviously not be the one designing the panels. As always, the Japanese company will rely on third-party suppliers, but will hope to make the difference thanks to its integration know-how, its image processing processor and, in the case of this RGB LED, thanks to a home-made backlight panel specifically developed for this screen technology.

RGB to go where OLED can't

For Sony (as for its competitors), the advantages of RGB are obvious: this technology, which allows individual control of the backlighting of the three primary colors, red (R), green (G or V) and blue (B), allows even higher brightness levels to be achieved (4000 nits at the very least), but also offers a wider color gamut with high dynamic range.

Indeed, thanks to individualized control of the RGB LEDs, it is possible to enhance the bright areas of the image without saturating the white and, in the same way, to play on the different tones of gray and black without "blocking the blacks". Finally, one last undeniable advantage, particularly compared to OLED, is size. With RGB LED, it is possible to move towards very large diagonals, which has also allowed Hisense and TCL to announce TVs of more than 115 inches at CES 2025.

When will Sony announce its RGB TV?

Now that Sony's intentions are clear, one question remains major: when will this RGB model be launched on the market? According to the discussions we had with the brand's teams, this commercialization should not take place before next year. Will Sony consider this "technological revolution" worthy of an announcement at CES 2026? The answer in less than a year.
