At the New York Toy Fair, Wizards of the Coast unveiled six cards from this set. On the menu: Spider-Man and his enemies, but also cards that highlight cult objects like the Green Goblin's pumpkin bombs and Doc Ock's tentacles. Each of these cards will have special abilities inspired by the comics. Venom, for example, can exile a creature from the enemy's graveyard, while Doctor Octopus' tentacles allow him to steal an enemy artifact.
A set tailor-made for Spidey
Why a set entirely dedicated to Spider-Man? Wizards of the Coast executive producer Max McCall tells IGN that the idea was to "honor the character and all the adversaries he's faced over the years." Simply adding him to a larger Marvel set would have left too many characters out in the cold. "We could have maybe squeezed in Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales, but there wouldn't have been room for Aunt May," he adds.
This Spider-Man set will be playable in Standard format and will be the second fully draftable set in the Universes Beyond line, following Final Fantasy. No pre-constructed Commander decks this time, but a few cards will still be designed for this format.
Wizards also took the time to properly transcribe the identity of Spidey in the game mechanics. Mark Rosewater, Magic's lead designer, explains that "Spider-Man's sense of duty corresponds to the color white, his scientific intelligence to the color blue, and his connection to the animal kingdom to the color green." Everything is designed to stick to the spirit of the hero.
On the wallet side, several options will be available: count $38 for a collector's booster, $42 for a Scene Box and $210 for a box of 30 Play boosters. Pre-orders are already open open on Amazon and in specialty stores.
In addition to Spider-Man, Wizards of the Coast continues its exploration of cult universes with Universes Beyond sets planned for Avatar: The Last Airbender and other original Magic expansions like Tarkir: Dragontorm and Edge of Eternities. Crossovers still have a bright future ahead of them!
