The App Store will summarize user comments

Comments and reviews left by users of the App Store are a valuable source of information about an application. When reading past experiences, we sometimes detect a scam or, more simply, we realize that the app does not meet our needs. Apple will go a step further: in iOS 18.4, a summary of reviews will appear.

Amazon and Google have gone first

This summary, generated by large language models (LLM), groups together the strong points and important information reported by users, all in a format of a few lines which certainly will not leave enough room for nuance... But in the blink of an eye, we will already have a small idea of the reception of the application by its users.

Apple specifies that these summaries will be updated "at least once a week" for applications and games that have a sufficient number of comments. If the summary produces a strange result or if it presents a problem, the user will be able to report it by holding their finger on the text. Developers also have the possibility to report a problem to the App Store.

For the moment, this new feature will only be offered in English, but Apple plans to deploy it worldwide during the year. The summaries are not generated locally but on servers, they are in fact identical from one device to another. This function completes the scoreboard of Apple Intelligence, which will be activated in Europe with the final version of iOS 18.4 expected in April.

Apple is not the first to get involved in review summaries. Such a system has existed on Amazon for two years. Google added a similar function in Maps last year.
