Little known to the general public, a French manufacturer of connected rings promises the arrival of two health-related functions never before seen in an accessory of this type.

Since the arrival of Samsung's Galaxy Ring, connected rings have gone from the shadows to the spotlight. Many people have subsequently discovered brands like Oura or Ultrahuman, even though they have been present in this sector for years. Even Apple is going to launch with its own model. While it must be admitted that most smart rings are similar in terms of design, some seek to stand out with new features.

This is the case with Circular. The French company has indeed announced its Circular Ring 2, presented as “the most advanced health monitoring ring in the world”. To justify this ambitious claim, it would be able to do what until now, no other competitor of the genre manages to achieve: accurately measure blood pressure and glycemia (blood sugar level).

The Circular Ring 2 will include two health-related options never before seen in a ring

Measuring blood pressure is not new in itself. What is different is the technique used. The majority of connected accessories offering this option use photoplethysmography (PPG). The results displayed, however, are imprecise estimates. The Circular Ring 2 announces that it will combine PPG with the electrocardiogram, which will allow it to use Pulse Transit Time (PTT). Roughly speaking, this is the time it takes for blood to pass through the arteries.

The result will be more precise than current processes. A user will be able, according to the firm, to take measurements over a period of 30 seconds to 2 minutes at different times of the day. The idea is to check how blood pressure is impacted at certain times of the day (at meals, while exercising, at work, etc.). This option will be made operational by a software update of the ring by the end of 2025.

As for blood sugar, its measurement will also take the form of an update, but this time at the end of 2026. Still non-invasive, so without having to prick your finger, the technique will consist of analyzing how light interacts with the blood. To do this, PPG will be combined with machine learning algorithms. This will make it possible to measure fluctuations in blood sugar levels, although Circular is aware that this will not replace a traditional medical examination.

Circular's connected ring is expected to arrive in summer 2025

If the company manages to keep its promises, it will allow measurements that Apple, Google, or Samsung are not yet capable of using their connected accessories. As always, we will have to wait for tests to verify any discrepancies between the announcements and reality. Still, the prospect of a ring capable of such things is encouraging, and we hope the results live up to expectations.

If you want to pre-order the Circular Ring 2, you'll have to go through its Kickstarter page. The original asking price has been far exceeded, so it's certain to see the light of day. The connected ring is available from $239 (around €220), without having to add a subscription to access its features.

Note that this is the lowest price for early buyers. Depending on when you order, the price may be higher. The crowdfunding campaign ends on April 14, 2025, with delivery expected between June and July of the same year.
