The era of autonomous humanoid robots is near. Whether they are used to make cars or their own kind, they are becoming more and more efficient. Advances in artificial intelligence are not unrelated to this evolution, and Google doesn't want to miss the curve. Its subsidiary DeepMind has announced the creation of a specialized AI based on its language model: Gemini Robotics.

For the Mountain View firm, a humanoid robot is only useful if it can perform three tasks. First, it must react in real time to what you say or do. Then, it must demonstrate dexterity to perform precise gestures. Finally, the robot must be able to understand its general environment, whatever it is immersed in. Based on these principles, DeepMind has partnered with Apptronik to develop a robot with astonishing capabilities.

After placing food and a container on a table, someone asks the robot to put a specific food item in it. It identifies it perfectly, but more importantly, it adjusts its movement at the same time as the person voluntarily moves the container several times. dexterity, the machine is not left behind: it can close a pencil case, a zippered bag or even fold a sheet of paper to make origami.

What is impressive is that none of the gestures performed by the robot are predetermined. It performs them in real time after analyzing the request and its environment, which makes its use very natural. For example, you can ask it to play tic-tac-toe with you or prepare your lunchbox by telling it what to put in it. A real mechanical assistant.

Google has already entrusted its AI model Gemini Robotics to specialized companies such as Boston Dynamics (behind the Atlas robot), Agility Robots or Agile Robots. We can't wait to see the results.
