Ultrafins smartphones, with lens and madness screens of madness… The three Trends of the MWC 2025

The Mobile World Congress, the annual grand mass for telephony and gadgets, held its 2025 edition from March 3 to 6, 2025. Here are the three trends that marked the editorial staff of 01net.com.

Ultra-thin smartphones

In addition to its Galaxy A, Samsung took advantage of the show to show the public its Galaxy S25 Edge, an ultra-thin smartphone that could be released in the spring, but without allowing the possibility of touching it. Another manufacturer, Tecno, overtook the Korean giant by allowing users to get their hands on an ultra-thin smartphone concept, the SPARK Slim. This allows us to get a first idea of this new type of product that should be the trend of 2025, since Apple is also expected to be at the turning point with a probable iPhone 17 Air in preparation.

Lenses on smartphones

Still on smartphones, but going in a totally opposite direction, we saw at the show two smartphones offering the addition of a "classic" camera lens on a phone, one from Xiaomi and the other from Realme.

Xiaomi's version is probably the most advanced, since it is a modified Xiaomi 15, to which a device has been added to the back to magnetically attach a very small lens. Featuring a focal aperture of f/1.4, it uses the smartphone battery and transmits information from photos taken via a laser system, in order to avoid any latency.

Realme, for its part, has teamed up with Sony to attach real lenses, modified for the occasion, to the camera module of a smartphone. In short, the image passes through the lens once, then passes through the smartphone's camera block. A solution that is a pure trade show concept.

Concepts with folding screens

Even if it is not a new thing in the strict sense, folding screens are still a hit at trade shows. We were able to see many prototypes and products that rely on this technology. Two stood out to us: a folding Switch concept presented by Samsung Display, and a PC concept with a folding screen by Lenovo.

The latter brings a twist to the usual formula of PCs with folding screens. Rather than choosing a classic laptop format, the Chinese manufacturer has chosen to integrate the screen hinge at the very top of the PC. This, in order to unfold the screen upwards to obtain a huge vertical 18.1-inch panel.
