Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Everything we know to date (release date, prices, history, context, gameplay ...)

Five years after the release of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the last major installment in the Assassin’s Creed saga, Ubisoft is finally ready to reveal the sequel with a new adventure that will take the direction of Feudal Japan. After a long, complicated development, and in particular two postponements (since the game was expected for November 2024, then February 2025), Assassin’s Creed Shadows will finally arrive on March 20.

The game promises to bring a lot of new features and should, we hope, correct a lot of flaws criticized in the old installments and in the old Assassin’s Creed games. To be up to date and not miss anything about this new game, we offer you a summary file with all the important information to know about this Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. This is the very first game in the saga that is only “next-gen” and will not be available on PS4 and Xbox One.

What is the price and which editions for Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Finally, the last edition will be the Collector's version of the game, offered at 239.99 euros. This ultimate edition offers you all the content of the deluxe edition as well as a statue of Naoe and Yasuke, an exclusive SteelBook case, a 76-page collector's artbook, the tsuba of Naoe's life-size katana, a world map, the Creed wall scroll and two sumi-e lithographs.

Will Assassin's Creed Shadows be a direct sequel to another Assassin's Creed game?

No, Shadows will be a brand new game, featuring an original story with new characters. It is not a direct sequel to a previously released game. However, it is a new game in the main series. Thus, there will be references to the universe and Lore of the series. So it’s not essential to have played the old games, but it can be a plus.

What will Assassin’s Creed Shadows offer?

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will immerse us in Feudal Japan, in a large open world to explore. Prepare yourself to discover spectacular fortified cities and bustling ports, passing by peaceful shrines and rural landscapes. Brave unpredictable weather conditions, changing seasons and reactive environments.

The game will allow you to control two characters. First, you have Naoe, a shinobi assassin from the province of Iga, who begins a long journey across Japan to keep an impossible promise and obtain revenge. With Naoe, you will be able to adopt a gentle approach. Agile and stealthy, you will be able to use noise, light and shadows to avoid being spotted by enemies on the lookout. Distract the guards with your kunai, shuriken and smoke bombs, infiltrate enemy bases with your grappling hook and great agility, then assassinate your targets with your hidden blade.

The second character is Yasuke. After completing his training to become a samurai worthy of the name, Yasuke discovers a new goal in confronting the demons of his past. With him, you will opt for the passage in force. Prepare to strike your opponents with power and brutal precision. Use his combat skills to attack, block, parry and defeat your enemies. Free Japan from its oppressors by mastering the vast arsenal of weapons at your disposal, including the katana, the kanabō, the bows, the naginata and many others.

How long will Assassin’s Creed Shadows last?

In early March 2025, as the game’s release approached, Ubisoft revealed the different lifespans for its new game Assassin’s Creed. We learned that it would take around 30 to 40 hours to complete the main storyline (in a straight line) and no less than 80 hours to complete 100% of the game with all the side quests. Of course, these are averages that can vary by a few hours depending on the players.

It is therefore a little less than Assassin’s Creed Valhalla which offered a main storyline of 60 hours on average and around 100 hours to finish the game 100%. Many players had criticized that it was much too much and quickly repetitive.

Will Assassin’s Creed Shadows offer an online mode?

No, like the previous games in the license, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be a single-player game only, offering a single-player experience, centered on the story, the narration and the exploration of the open world. On the other hand, several rumors mention the possible arrival of a cooperative mode in the coming months.

Will the game have the right to DLC?

Yes, as usual, Ubisoft has confirmed the arrival of several DLCs and expansions in the months and years to come after the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

The first expansion is called “The Hunt on Awaji”. It should arrive by the end of 2025 and would offer around ten hours of additional gameplay. It will invite you to leave for a new unique region, the island of Awaji, a place full of mystery and beauty. On this island, you will be in search of a lost treasure while avoiding the traps and ambushes of new merciless enemies. Thrill with tension as a new faction hunts you and threatens the mysterious island of Awaji. Master the bō, a new weapon for Naoe, and unlock new gear, skills, and abilities.

Will there be Early Access?

No. It was originally planned, however, following criticism and (negative) player feedback, Ubisoft has made the decision to listen to its community and remove Early Access from Assassin’s Creed Shadows as well as all of their future games.

What genre is Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

This new installment follows in the footsteps of RPG (role-playing game) games like Assassin’s Creed Origins (2017), Odyssey (2018), and Valhalla (2020). This is not an action-adventure game like the first games or Mirage (2023). However, Ubisoft being well aware that not all fans of the saga are fans of the RPG genre, the French publisher offers a new feature allowing you to choose between the RPG genre or the narrative game side.

Ubisoft presented Canon Mode a few days ago. The latter allows you to choose between the RPG side, which keeps the dialogue choices and allows players to make choices with dialogues that can be longer and influenced on the rest of the adventure. Or, opt for the linear narrative side as with the first games where players will not have to make choices and will not have several dialogue proposals in their adventure. A good way to satisfy everyone!
