Video games adapted into movies are all the rage right now at the cinema. After the huge box office success of the adaptation of Minecraft, it's the turn of another cult game to be brought to the big screen under the direction of Michael Bay with Sydney Sweeney at production.
Mario, Sonic, Minecraft, ... video games are a hit at the cinema
While superheroes no longer attract as many audiences to movie theaters as they once did, video games adapted into films are a hit at the box office. As proof, Super Mario Bros. released in 2023 had grossed more than $1.36 billion worldwide, the three Sonic films have exceeded the billion dollar mark and Minecraft with Jack Black and Jason Momoa is crushing everything in its path. Consequently, faced with the success and the interest of the spectators, Sega wants to continue to ride the wave of the recipe. The Japanese firm has already planned to adapt Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Shinobi and Space Channel 5. And it will not stop there because it has just announced that one of its cult games released in the 1980s will be adapted on the big screen by Michael Bay.
After Transformers, Michael Bay adapts this cult video game
Indeed, as reported by the site Deadline, Sega has entrusted Michael Bay, director of Transformers, with the adaptation of its video game OutRun into a live-action film.
Released in 1986 in arcades, OutRun was created by Yu Suzuki. The game was later released on the Master System and Mega Drive. The year it was released, the game became the most profitable arcade title. It was a worldwide success, and several sequels were released. In OutRun, the player takes on the role of the driver of a Ferrari Testarossa alongside a blonde passenger. The goal is to get the car to its destination as quickly as possible while avoiding traffic.
Michael Bay is known for his blockbuster movies featuring vehicles that drive at high speed since we owe him Transformers, Bad Boys or more recently Ambulance. With Jayson Rothwell as screenwriter, he will have to invent a whole universe since OutRun has neither a story nor an emblematic character.
Note that the director is associated with the project with Sydney Sweeney who, via her production company Fifty Fifty Films, will be co-producer. However, even though it hasn't been announced, the actress could possibly be part of the cast of this adaptation. For now, no release date for the OutRun film has been announced.
