Alpine integrates a fake thermal engine into its A390 electric SUV

On May 27, there will be a new electric model in the Alpine range. Alongside the A290, the French brand will unveil the A390, its first SUV, which plans to offer 500 hp through three engines (one at the front and two at the rear), in a silhouette that straddles the C and D segments (the same platform as the Nissan Ariya). To avoid drawing a line too quickly on 70 years of history and renown, Alpine is counting on a dummy combustion engine, only perceptible at the ear.

In a recent update on the development status of its car, Alpine released new images of a prototype, and mentioned the existence of this new Alpine Drive Sound audio system, with two distinct sounds diffused inside to "enhance the driver experience." The first sound will be intended for sporty driving, and the second will be more useful for everyday use with a smoother ride.

For those who have already Looking at the new Alpine A290 (voted Car of the Year 2024 with the Renault R5), a similar system is available. It does not seek to reproduce the exact sound of the A110, but rather to add to the experience of driving an electric Alpine the lack of the auditory side. On the track, it is clear that the system has its place. At high speed, it is more reminiscent of that of a thermal car and not of a futuristic electric car, tiring at the long one.

A 4.62 m long Alpine

To operate, the Alpine Drive Sound system relies on speakers from Devialet. An audio system nine amplifiers for 615W of power, which can be configured in the car's menus, from the central screen. For now, Alpine has not mentioned whether the system will be the same in the new A390, which is keeping its interior secret.

Even if it will be categorized as an SUV or a crossover, the French brand does not want to call it that. At the last Paris Motor Show, when Alpine unveiled the A390 concept, its teams preferred to call the model a "Sport fastback." It's true that it won't look like any other sports model on the market, measuring 4.62 m long and 1.53 m high. But to say that it's an A110 with five seats... nothing could be less certain.
